About LHS Career Academies:

Lawrence High School’s 10th, 11th, and 12th graders have the opportunity to participate in one of five career-based academies. Each career academy allows students with similar interests and aspirations to collaborate and learn through shared experiences.  Coordinated efforts ensure the integration of outside resources, such as guest speakers and real-world applications, into the classroom.

Mission Statement:

The purpose of the LHS Career Academy system is to prepare and motivate students to pursue further education and training related to Career Readiness, Life Literacy, and Key Skills that will guide their post-secondary plans.

Vision Statements:

  • Innovative Academic Pathways: Academy students will be placed on an academic pathway that addresses “Career Readiness” skills, ensuring they gain knowledge in a chosen field of study while meeting high school prerequisites for competitive post-secondary programs.
  • Key Skills Development: Students will develop critical and creative thinking, research, reading, writing, speaking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Subskills include analyzing, reasoning, negotiating, and questioning. Rigorous coursework will connect these skills to other academic subjects.
  • Career Exploration: Academy students will learn about the roles, responsibilities, and career paths of specific professions through classroom activities, workplace site visits, and professional engagements.
  • Life Literacy and Real-World Applications: Students will engage in learning activities and projects designed to strengthen their proficiencies in Life Literacies and Key Skills, applying knowledge to real-world scenarios.
  • Capstone and Senior Presentation: Senior students will engage in authentic learning activities and create a presentation demonstrating the knowledge they’ve gained. Projects will focus on technology, communications, research, problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Academy Goals:

  1. Provide career academy students with a tailored learning experience in a self-identified area of interest
  2. Enhance learning opportunities to support students’ post-high school career planning.
  3. Establish pathways for students entering the workforce or continuing career preparation through college.
